Product Review: Bacon Flavored Toothpicks

Time for another product review of a bacon-inspired product.. This time it’s Bacon Flavored Toothpicks by Accoutrements.

Let me begin by thanking our very cool friend Charlie for purchasing the toothpicks for us (Ric and I). He’s definately one of our biggest bacon supporters.

I also want to make sure to note that I think Accoutrements is an awesome company and is one of the best places to find novelty gifts. But that’s some of the problem with this review….

The bacon toothpicks are simply a novelty gift. As a novelty gift, it’s GREAT! The tin that it comes in is cute with it’s pig in a top hat, complete with his monocle on and toothpick in mouth.

But if you try and look at this product as a serious use in your day to day, then you may just puke on yourself each time you try to place this thing near your mouth. Ric said it best when I tried to get his reaction to the scent by putting it up to his nose. He said (joking of course), “Put that thing in my face again and I will punch you.” I felt the same way myself. There’s something about this fake bacon scent that people use in their products that turns my stomach. It’s a combination of puke and smelly socks in a smoker.

To make things worse… when I took it out to test on the cats, I realized the smell was now on my hand. I washed my hands but the smell did not come off. I actually poured perfume in my hand and then washed them throughly. That did the trick.

Oh, the cats reaction? They gummed it like cats will do. No big reactions to note.

I may have been a little dramatic. I only find the toothpicks to be a FAIL if someone was to actually use them. As a novelty or gag gift, they are EXCELLENT! And once I officially air out the tin they came in, I will use it as storage for something.

Product Review: Burger King’s Bacon Sundae

Awhile back, I tweeted when I first heard about Burger King coming out with a Bacon Sundae. They were advertising that it would have real bacon. This was perfect timing because during that time everyone was still having a fit over Jack in the Box and their Bacon Shake with the fake bacon syrup.

I honestly forgot about the sundae for some time and was reminded when people started talking about it again at work and on Facebook. So, of course Ric and I set out to aquire some Bacon Sundaes.

I was glad to see they used real bacon. And it was chunks of bacon. Like they actually took the bacon they use for the burgers and broke it up for the sundae. No bacon bits applied. That was a plus already. They also made sure to give you both chocolate fudge AND caramel topping with your vanilla sundae. It really was the best combination they could do.

But there was something a little disappointing in the bacon choice. They used hardwood smoked bacon… that was good. It wasn’t the chunks… those were just right in size. It was the fact that it was obviously fatty bacon slices. You know when you cook that poorly cut bacon with mostly fat? It’s chewy. And when it gets cold or room temp it gets to that gross congealed state. Not very yummy unless you use it for the right recipes. It just didn’t sit right with the ice cream.

Another thing I did find wrong with it was the fact that when I got to the bottom, there was about 5 tablespoons of extra fudge hidden for me. It was probably just the person who put it together. I doubt Burger King was actually planning on giving everyone a chocoalte surprise with their sundae. Some may think this would be an upside, but not for me. After eating a whole sundae that already had chocolate fudge on it, I just couldn’t eat 5 spoonfuls of chocolate straight.

Ric’s reaction: “It was ice cream with bacon. Salty and sweet. Thant’s all.” He didn’t seem too overly impressed but liked it enough to enjoy it for what it was.

Overall, I thought the sundae really was a fun experience but don’t plan on getting another one from them. You can’t control how each Burger King employee is going to fix your sundae. The extra chocolate was not a big issue. And the bacon selection may be better during different times of the day (we did go about 9 PM). I did get a few bites of crispy bacon – those were the amazing ones!

I do encourage people to go and try it for themselves. I would love to hear about your experience!

Time for Summer! Bacon Flops!

Summer is here. Well, if you want to get technical, the calendar says June 20th is the first day of summer. I live in Florida, so…. it’s already here. When I can’t go outside without fantasizing about water and when I am in my steamy car praying for the AC to fill the space with it’s coolness – then it’s summer. That mean’s it’s time to dress like you have no money for clothes and cool off. It’s flip flop season! And just to make things cooler – June 15th is National Flip Flop Day!

So, what does a bacon addict do to celebrate National Flip Flop Day? Uh, Bacon Flip Flops of course.

I searched the internet to find selections on Bacon Flip Flops. I first came across a picture of someone who actually made bacon flip flops – with real bacon. I quickly deemed this to be a “BACON FAIL“. And yes, I still do if anyone attempts this in a realistic way. But, I looked into it further and found that it was a clip from a video someone made about creating a shoe. If you are interested, check out “AMAZING BACON FLOPS! (Rhett & Link Shoe?).”

Now, be it that a shoe of any form actually made from bacon would be a terrible idea, there are flip flops out there designed for bacon fans. Of course, I found most to be on CafePress. Below are my favorites. You can visit Cafe Press and simply put in ‘Bacon Flip Flops’ or ‘Pig Flip Flops’ to see all of their selections. And if you have something even better in mind, you can ‘create your own’.

Simple and yummy.

A swarm of bacon.

Bacon wave-tastic.

*** AND P.S. Tropical Smoothie Cafe is giving away a free 24 oz Jetty Punch Smoothie between 2 and 7 pm on June 15th in celebration of their 6th Annual National Flip Flop Day.
